An eSIM is a digital SIM your phone can download, so there is no physical card to insert. With Atli, you install the eSIM once and add travel data plans to it.
Atli is data-only, so it does not replace your existing phone number.

Read the full guideiMessage needs the SIM that carries your phone number to be switched on. If you turn that line off while you travel, iMessage can switch to your Apple ID email instead. Your Atli eSIM does not cause this: it is data-only and has no number.
To keep your number, leave your own SIM on and turn Data Roaming off on that line. You can check before you fly: switch your own line off, then look under Settings › Apps › Messages › Send & Receive to see if your number is still listed.

Turning Data Roaming off on your own SIM stops roaming data, but not charges for calls or texts. Switching your own line off completely is the only sure way, but it stops calls and texts on your number, and on iPhone iMessage can move to your email. Check your carrier’s rates before you travel.
