What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM your phone can download instead of using a physical SIM card. Once installed, it lets your phone connect to a mobile network just like a regular SIM.

With Atli, you install the eSIM once and add travel data plans to it whenever you need them.

How does an eSIM work?

Your phone downloads an eSIM profile from the provider. That profile contains the information the phone needs to connect to a mobile network.

Many eSIM-capable phones can store multiple eSIM profiles, and supported phones let you choose which SIM or eSIM handles mobile data.

Ready to install Atli? See Install your eSIM.

How is an eSIM different from a physical SIM?

  • No physical card to insert or swap.
  • The eSIM profile is downloaded to your phone.
  • One phone can store multiple eSIM profiles if the device supports it.
  • You can usually keep your normal SIM while using a travel eSIM for data.

How does an Atli travel eSIM work?

Choose a data plan for your destination, install the Atli eSIM, and use it for mobile data while you travel.

  • Data Roaming stays on for Atli. Travel eSIMs connect through roaming. Atli does not charge an extra roaming fee.
  • Your plan starts when your phone first connects to a supported network at the destination. Buying or installing the eSIM does not start it. More in When your plan starts.
  • Atli is data-only. It does not provide a phone number, voice calls, or SMS. Apps such as WhatsApp can use the Atli data connection. More in Calls, texts and hotspot.
  • You install Atli once. New plans are added to the same Atli eSIM. You do not need a new QR code for every trip.

Does my phone support eSIM?

eSIM support depends on the exact phone model, region and sometimes carrier version. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked.

Check your exact model in the eSIM compatibility guide.

Can I keep my own SIM and phone number?

Yes, on a phone that supports Dual SIM. Your normal SIM can stay active for your phone number, calls and texts while Atli handles mobile data.

To avoid accidental roaming-data charges from your home carrier, turn Data Roaming off on your own SIM and keep it on for Atli.

FAQ

Is an eSIM more secure than a physical SIM?

An eSIM cannot be physically removed from the phone like a SIM card. Device security still depends on your phone and account settings.

Do I need Wi-Fi to install an eSIM?

You need an internet connection to install it. Wi-Fi before you travel is recommended because you may not have mobile data when you arrive.

Can I use one eSIM on two phones?

No. An installed Atli eSIM is used on one device. If you want another device online, you can share the connection by hotspot.

Does an eSIM expire?

The Atli eSIM stays on your phone. Each plan has its own validity period.

Does a travel eSIM come with a phone number?

Atli does not. It is data-only, so it does not provide a phone number, voice calls or SMS. Your normal SIM can keep your usual number, and WhatsApp stays on your own number.

Can I delete the eSIM and install it again?

Do not delete the Atli eSIM while a plan is on it. Between trips, turn the Atli line off instead.

Already deleted it from the same phone? Type wallet in Atli, open your eSIM, then tap QR / Install and try installing it again.

Reinstall not working? Type Talk to a human in the Atli chat.
