How to set up an eSIM on Android (Samsung and Pixel)

Install Atli on Wi-Fi before you travel. Once it is installed, turn the Atli eSIM on, choose it for mobile data, turn Data Roaming on for Atli, and keep Data Roaming off on your own SIM.

This guide covers Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel. Menu names on other Android phones may differ.

Need to install Atli first? See Install your eSIM.

Before you start

  • Your phone supports eSIM. Check your exact model in the eSIM compatibility guide.
  • Your phone is carrier-unlocked. A phone locked to one carrier will not accept an eSIM from another. Your carrier can confirm whether your phone is unlocked.
  • You have Wi-Fi for installation. Your phone needs an internet connection to download the eSIM profile.
Optional: Label the eSIM Atli

Your new line shows up as Connect at first. Giving the travel line the name Atli makes it easier to identify in the settings below.

  • Samsung Galaxy: Settings › Connections › SIM manager, tap the eSIM, then tap Name.
  • Google Pixel: Settings › Network & internet › SIMs, tap the eSIM, and edit its name.

  1. 3 Turn Data Roaming on for Atli

  1. 4 Keep Data Roaming off on your own SIM
Your own SIM can stay active for calls and texts. Keep Data Roaming off on that line to reduce the risk of home-carrier roaming-data charges. Calls and texts on your normal number may still be charged according to your carrier's roaming rates.

What should my own SIM do while I travel?

  • Keep it on. Keep your own SIM active if you want calls and texts on your normal number. Keep Data Roaming off on that SIM.
  • Turn it off. If you do not need calls or texts, you can turn your own SIM off during the trip. Apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram can still use Atli data.

For details on using two lines together, see Can I use a travel eSIM with my own SIM?.

Optional: Reduce background data

Android's Data Saver can reduce some background mobile-data use.

  • Samsung: Settings › Connections › Data usage › Data saver
  • Pixel: Settings › Network & internet › Data Saver (turn off to share data via Wi-Fi hotspot)

Photo backups and app updates can also use significant data, so consider setting them to Wi-Fi only.

What happens when I arrive?

  1. 1Turn Airplane Mode off.
  2. 2Wait 2–3 minutes for Atli to join a local network.
  3. 3If it still does not connect, turn Airplane Mode on for 30 seconds, then off again.

Still seeing No Service? See No Service after landing.

Check that Atli is working

  • Signal appears for the Atli eSIM.
  • To test Atli, turn Wi-Fi off temporarily and open a webpage.
  • Type check data in Atli to see your usage.

Have signal but no internet? See No data or won't connect.

When you get home

  1. 1Set mobile data back to your own SIM.
  2. 2Turn the Atli eSIM off until your next trip.
  3. 3Make sure your own SIM is turned back on if you disabled it.

Do not delete the Atli eSIM. New plans you buy later are added to the same eSIM.

FAQ

Should I add a phone number to the eSIM?

No. Atli is data-only and does not have a phone number.

Should I convert my own SIM to an eSIM?

No. Your own SIM and the Atli eSIM are separate. You do not need to convert your own SIM to use Atli.

Can my Pixel run Atli next to my own eSIM?

It depends on the exact Pixel model and regional version. Check your model in the eSIM compatibility guide.

Should I delete the eSIM when I get home?

No. Turn Atli off and keep it for your next trip. New plans are added to the same eSIM.

Already deleted it from the same phone? Type wallet in Atli, open your eSIM, then tap QR / Install and try installing it again.

Reinstall not working? Type Talk to a human in the Atli chat.

How early can I install the eSIM?

Any time before your trip. Installing the eSIM does not start the plan. The plan starts when your phone first connects to a supported network at the destination.
